The famous Call of Duty series began in 2003 and was developed by the then new company Infinity Ward. Call of Duty was their first game under new management and with a new team. Before the creation of IW, the main developers gave the world such a game as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, working in a studio called 2015, Inc. But after its collapse, bright heads came under the wing of Actvision and away we went..
Engine
The game was created on the id Tech 3 engine from id Software. As I said, some of the developers moved from 2015, Inc to Infinty Ward, and MoH was made on this engine, so the choice was obvious, since they already had experience working with it. But compared to Medal of Honor, id Tech has undergone many changes. For the better of course. Image blur, improved lighting system, dynamic shadows, and more. The gameplay of the game was reminiscent of the Allied Assault single. One difference was that more friendly soldiers could be stationed on the battlefield. The graphics in the game were not brilliant, but it’s also difficult to say that they were bad. But, of course, there were some mistakes, such as “eternal respawn of enemies”. That is, no matter how much you sit in cover and shoot enemies, they will still crowd towards you until you run out of ammo and health. It was necessary to move forward to the “switch” that turned off this organ. Yes, it forced players to always move forward and not sit still, but every stick has two ends. It was not possible to run to some point and clear it because of the cover, and we had to attack it because of which some realism suffered, since stupidly running straight ahead and killing the Krauts was a little different.
Later, it was this engine that became the core for IW’s own developments, but they were more serious modifications than “pure” engines. But the improvements were colossal, so to immediately say that the basis is id Tech 3 was a little difficult, but still possible, especially for advanced people who fumbled in this matter.
Gameplay
The gameplay did not casinosnogamstop.co.uk/ bring anything revolutionary, but in general it was easy to play. Unlike MoH: Allied Assault, we were offered to go through three campaigns: Soviet, British and American. In general, the game has 26 different missions: both infantry missions, trips on tanks with vehicles, and night raids and storming of the Reichstag.
Also, the main missions were not “stealth”, but military operations, such as the opening of the Second Front, the assault on Stalingrad, the capture of the city of Foy, and the like. They also added a feature to the game called “shock” or “concussion”. No, it was not the player himself who was hiding under the table from the explosions, but it was our hero who “felt” the explosions firsthand and received a slight concussion. And all this was done by muting the sound, blurring the screen and making it difficult to control the fighter in this state.
The American campaign begins with a training camp, where we are taught basic actions in the game. And since our fighter is a paratrooper in the 506th regiment, we will participate in the opening of the Second Front with all that it implies. Namely: the destruction of enemy anti-aircraft guns, the capture of a small town with its subsequent defense, etc.d. Of course, it’s clear that a lot of time was spent on this campaign during development, because it and the Soviet one are the best in the game.
The British campaign has quieter missions compared to the Soviet one.
The beginning of the campaign for the fighter Alexei Voronin begins on September 18, 1942, during the capture of Stalingrad, which is almost entirely copied from the film “Enemy at the Gates,” but this has already been known for so long 🙂
The game has four difficulty levels, and each differs from them only in how many hits the main character can withstand. There is a health scale without auto-regeneration. On Veteran difficulty there are no first aid kits at levels. That’s why he’s a Veteran, so to speak.
The fighter can carry two main weapons, grenades and a pistol. It is possible to hit the enemy/friends with a butt.
The gameplay is completely linear. That is, to complete the mission we need to complete all the tasks assigned to us. They are arranged strictly in order and it is simply impossible to miss one. That’s why it’s a linear passage 🙂
Multiplayer
Multiplayer in Call of Duty is similar to online game modes of the time, which include respawning in a deathmatch fashion, choosing weapons and factions at the beginning of the game, or changing classes when dying. The game contains 16 official maps. There are many types of weapons to choose from, but with the release of the United Offensive addon, the list of weapons has been expanded.
By the way, this part, Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War, are the only games where in multiplayer it is possible to use vehicles, namely: motorcycles, jeeps, tanks.
Some facts
In general, the game received positive reviews and ratings and was warmly received by critics and journalists, and is still played online.
In 2003 she received the title "Game of the Year"from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, and in 2004 for "Best Audio Accompaniment"and many more awards.
On Metacritic and Gamerankings the game has a rating of 91% and 92% respectively.
Initially, the game was created only for PC, but already in 2009 it was ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStaion 3, and was part of Call of Duty Classic. You can buy it directly in the store, or you could buy the Hardened/Prestige Edition for CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and get the pack for free. The gameplay almost remains the same, only there is no way to speed up, there are no perks, vibrations and online statistics. There is also no Quick Save/Load function. This pack is an HD remake of the original, with all the errors that were in the PC version fixed, so the game runs smoothly and without any crashes.
The American campaign was based on the series "Brothers in Arms (Band of Brothers)". It is in the series that you can see the destruction of anti-aircraft guns in the field, Bastogne, Foy and the like (I recommend watching it if anyone hasn’t seen it yet).
In 2004, an add-on was released – United Offensive, which was developed by Gray Matter Interactive and Treyarch. New missions for all campaigns, weapons for multiplayer and a couple of new modes for it were added to the game.
United Offensive is, so far, the first large-scale addition for the series.
At the end of the credits you can see the inscription “No real cows were harmed”, since in the first missions you can see the carcasses of killed cows.
Very soon, a sequel will be released in 2005 – wonderful Call of Duty 2, with its new heroes, operations and its own atmosphere 😀
