According to Grandma Tala, the drama storyteller, Maui stole Te Fiti’s coveted heart centuries before their time. As a result, a lava demon known as Te Kā was born, and the world was plunged into slow-burning darkness. The only hope for humanity lies in the hands of a fearless hero, who must travel to find Maui and put her heart back in its rightful place. Chief Tui says there is no such darkness that consumes the world and points out the law that prohibits anyone on the island from walking past the reef. Moana disregards her father’s words and advances towards the shores of the ocean in bliss. There, she helps a struggling newborn sea turtle head out into the ocean from predators.

She learns that Maui has stolen the heart for a village that he has looked after once he was given his powers Moana from the gods. Through some encouragement from Moana, Maui is given the strength to shape shift with ease, even managing to turn into a hawk. She ignores his protest, which brings Te Kā to partially destroy Maui’s hook, severely damaging it and sending them far back across the ocean. Out of anger, Maui leaves Moana stranded in the middle of the ocean, fearing that going back to fight Te Kā will permanently destroy his hook. He flies away after telling her that the ocean chose the wrong person to save her people which is something she has been trying to find out why.

As Moana leaves, her grandmother’s light fades and her spirit guides Moana beyond the reef and into the sea. The next night, the ocean transports Moana to the island of Maui, where the two meet and start off as mildly antagonistic. She manages to use her wits to escape and travels to Maui with the help of the ocean. She orders him to return the heart, but upon seeing it, Maui attempts to leave the boat, only to be brought back by the ocean. He claims the heart is cursed, which Moana refuses to believe until they are attacked by a gang of pirates called Kakamora.
When discovering Motunui being affected by Te Kā’s curse and that she has been chosen by the Ocean to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana attempts to again persuade her father, along with their people to leave Motuni so they can help restore the heart. However, her father is infuriated to hear Moana has discovered their ancestors’ boats and proceeds to burn them, despite Moana’s objections. Their argument is cut short when they hear that Gramma Tala is suddenly dying, leading Moana and her father to stand by his mother’s deathbed.

Moana persuades him to do otherwise when she claims such an act will help Maui regain a positive reputation amongst mortals. Maui agrees to help, but not without his fishhook, which is said to be in the clutches of Tamatoa, a giant crab living in the Realm of Monsters.

After Moana retrieves Heihei from the Kakamora, Maui is able to get their massive sailboats to collide into each other and the three make it out unharmed. In order to do so, he needs his hook which is hidden in the Realm of Monsters, held by a giant villainous coconut crab named Tamatoa. In his lair, Maui barely retrieves his magical fish hook while Moana distracts Tamatoa by having him sing about himself. Afterward, Maui and Moana escape his lair and Tamatoa is left stranded on his back in a last-ditch effort to grab them both. Back on the sailboat, Maui becomes depressed that he is unable to shapeshift into anything that he wants with the fish hook but ultimately decides to teach Moana how to sail instead, after the ocean numbs his derrière with a blow dart. After Moana had an argument with her father over sailing beyond the reef to find more fish, she was comforted by Pua who tried to convince her sail into the ocean to look for more fish.

One day, when Moana attempted to sail beyond the reef after an argument with her father, she got her foot injured when it was stuck on some coral. Moana attempted to hide her injured foot from her grandmother, but Tala was smart enough to see what happened and promised to not tell her father.
